From what I have gathered I have found a amphitheatre is a structure of a theatre it means double theatre or circular theatre. The structure itself is in partly below the ground with the sides raised out and up so that everyone could see below them these sides went around the whole perimeter of the arena.
The lower part is called the ima cavea
The middle is called the media cavera
And the upper part is called the summa cavera
All these different parts were there to show rankings. The lower seats were reserved for those of the dignitaries and those higher up were for the plebeians, the ordinary people of ordinary class.
The amphitheatre itself was capable of holding up to 12,000 people while others have calculated 20,000. The circus and gladiatorial games were hosted in the amphitheatre Pompeian's devoted lots of spare time to these performances around 59AD a deadly fight took place betwwen Pompeians aand some of the people of Neceria this ended with a ban of these events that lasted for 10 years. The date of the construction dates back to 80B.C it is the oldest building that survived out of the Roman ampeitherater in existence it was possibly the model for those that were built in Rome. The amphitheatre was built with a depth of seven metres. This amphitheatre did not have a underground section but it was equipped with a velarium this is a cover to protect people from the rain. This ampitheratre was built of stone but they had previously been made out of wood.
Overtime the amphitheatre is still used today as a archaeological site for study and it is still historical landmark. The public still have access to it and is used for concerts and other events.
